Yogyakarta is getting ready to celebrate its 270th anniversary, and this year’s celebration is set to be bigger, longer, and more colorful. The city government has prepared a series of events throughout September and October 2026, ranging from major festivals and cultural performances to community activities and special promotions. Carrying the theme “Authentic and Concrete,” the celebration is all about strengthening Yogyakarta’s identity while turning its unique character into real activities, creative works, and experiences that people can actually enjoy and benefit from.
According to Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo, this year’s celebration is designed a little differently. The idea behind “Authentic and Concrete” is to highlight what makes Yogyakarta truly Yogyakarta—not just as a slogan, but through things that can be seen, experienced, and enjoyed by the community. The celebration will feature seven main events in October, including YK FestiSale, Simfoni 1001 Pembatik, Sarkemfest, Wayang Jogja Night Carnival (WJNC), Kustomfest, and Otentik City Rally. YK FestiSale, for example, will bring special discounts and promotions from retailers, hotels, restaurants, MSMEs, and other businesses, giving visitors another reason to explore the city and shop local.
One of the biggest highlights will be the Wayang Jogja Night Carnival (WJNC) on October 7. Unlike previous years, the carnival will stretch from the Malioboro area all the way to Kilometer Zero, giving spectators a much longer space to enjoy the parade. The change also comes from the huge crowds attracted by WJNC in previous years, with more than 40,000 people gathering around Tugu Yogyakarta. By extending the route, the city hopes visitors can enjoy the carnival more comfortably while also experiencing the energy of Malioboro. The celebration is not limited to one or two days either—the goal is to keep people in Yogyakarta longer and turn the anniversary into a month-long experience rather than just a single event.
There will be plenty more happening around the city. October will feature around 20 supporting events, including Jogja Harmoni, Festival Layanan Publik, Malioboro Coffee Night, Festival Inovasi Jogja, Bakpia Day, Jogja Golf Tournament, Youth and Innovation, and 270 Otentik Running. September will already get the party started with nine “road to” events, such as Jogja Coffee Week, Festival Kebudayaan Yogyakarta, KAI Mini Fair, an emissions testing event, neighborhood and river cleanliness competitions, and a student carnival. Hotels, retailers, railway operators, restaurants, shopping centers, and local businesses are also joining in with special menus, promotions, discounts, and other activities. PT KAI, for instance, will hold KAI Mini Fair on September 21–22, including train ticket discounts, MSME showcases, music, and a collaboration with Purawisata featuring Ramayana performances.
What makes the 270th anniversary particularly interesting is the strong collaboration between different parts of the city’s creative and economic ecosystem. The government, private companies, universities, communities, hotels, retailers, and local businesses are all taking part. On October 7, PHRI-member hotels are even expected to serve special Yogyakarta-style breakfast menus, while retailers in the city are preparing month-long promotions through Jogja FestiSale. In short, Yogyakarta 270 is not just about celebrating the city’s birthday—it is about turning its culture, creativity, hospitality, and local economy into one big city-wide celebration. So if you are planning to visit Jogja around September and October 2026, expect plenty of reasons to stay a little longer.
