Yogyakarta at a Glance

Yogyakarta is famous as one of the main tourist destinations in Indonesia. A large number of dignitaries, including state leaders, and tourists have visited the ancient city. The cultural colors of Yogyakarta are still clearly visible due to the presence of temples, traditional buildings, various cultural activities and a number of famous artists. This is highlighted by the presence of living traditions in the daily lives of Yogyakarta people who love art and are friendly.

Why Yogyakarta?

As a city of tradition and culture, Yogyakarta is famous for its arts, both traditional and modern. It enchants visitors with classical dance, music and shadow puppet shows, while skilled craftsmen produce unrivaled batik and silver crafts. Apart from the kraton, or Sultan’s palace which is the heart of traditional artistic life, in the surrounding country, there are many Buddhist and Hindu monuments that stand as reminders of the majesty of the Javanese Kingdom that once ruled the land. Today, the friendliness of the people and its endless cultural and natural attractions create an inspiring environment that positions Yogyakarta as an attractive place for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions.

Transport

Adisucipto International Airport is the main airport serving the Yogyakarta area. This airport is located about 6 km from the city center. Adisucipto is the third busiest airport on the island of Java, after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. Yogyakarta is connected to most major cities in Indonesia, as well as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Man and Culture

The majority of Yogyakarta residents are Javanese whose language comes from ancient Sanskrit. However, because Yogyakarta is considered “the academic city of Indonesia” due to its many centers of higher education, a large number of its residents are students who come from all over Indonesia to study. As the capital and center of several kingdoms in the past, this region and its people are very rich in cultural diversity. Cultural relics of the past include magnificent temples, ruins of palaces and monasteries, various traditions, cultural events, traditional folk and performing arts, architecture and other traditional activities. Due to its rich culture and heritage, Yogyakarta has long been known as the birthplace of Javanese culture.

Climate

The average daily temperature ranges between 26 degrees and 28 degrees Celsius with a minimum of 18 degrees C and a maximum of 35 degrees C respectively. The average humidity is 74% with a minimum of 65% and a maximum of 84% respectively.
